Bloomington, IL - We hope that you are doing well and staying sane and healthy during this unprecedented time. As the COVID-19 situation pans out, our administration has had to make important decisions regarding the 2020 season.
On March 25th, 2020, the Midwest Premier League held a virtual meeting with all the club administrators to determine the best action plan for the 2020 season. After hearing all of the club's thoughts and concerns, the league board (consisting of representatives of each member club) decided it would be best to cancel the 2020 season of the Midwest Premier League. The MWPL is a club run league that values the sharing of ideas and making decisions as a group for financial and athletic sustainability. We would like to be as transparent as possible and would like to share reasons that we as a league feel the cancellation of the MWPL is the best decision.
- Current State ordered stay-at-home orders go up to the end of April with a possibility of being extended further. If an extension were to happen, this would mess with scheduled matches in the MWPL and stadium availability across the league.
- If the stay-at-home order were to be completely lifted at the end of the month, it would not give member clubs enough time to prepare for the MWPL season, including tryouts and evaluations.
- Due to the financial burden of COVID-19, many businesses are rightfully concerned with the impact it would have on them. This would affect sponsorship deals that MWPL clubs rely on to fund a full season.
- Being the first year of MWPL soccer, we as a league believe that supporters should have the best experience possible. With the COVID-19 concern, there is no way that we would be able to provide the best fan experience.
It is with great sadness that we share this news with you. FC Diablos and all MWPL clubs were looking forward to a great 2020 season. We hope that all of you will stay in contact and engage with the club while we go through this situation together. We look forward to a great 2021 season and will begin the planning very soon!
Moving forward, all 2020 event fees will be refunded and we hope to have small programs for local players as soon as it is safe to hold those programs.
